There's something sexy about being an anomaly,
especially if the odds against you are great.
Flowers was the first black athlete to win a gold
medal at the 2002 Winter Olympics. The former track
star (sprints, hurdles, long jump) turned to
bobsledding at the age of 26. In a few short months
before the Games, she was dumped by her former
partner and hooked up with a new driver, Jill
Bakken. The pair pulled off a stunning upset to win
gold at the Salt Lake Olympics. In Torino, she
placed sixth in the women's bobsled event with
teammate Jean Prahm.
Flowers has a lot of faith and we admire her
stamina. After making her mark in history, she
wrote her first book, "Running on Ice: The
Overcoming Faith of Vonetta Flowers," and gave
birth to twin boys, Jaden and Jorden.
Flowers also was selected as one of Essence
magazine's 50 Most Inspiring African-Americans. But
don't let her warm smile fool you. She can outrun
you on the track and on the ice.
