Background
Anderson is one of only five women to win an NHRA
national event in a professional category. Shelly
made her NHRA debut at Pomona in 1991 and has been
a regular on the series ever since. She holds the
NHRA speed record for a Top Fuel Dragster with a
run of 316.23mph. Past Driver of the Parts America
Top Fuel Dragster
Now a six-year veteran on the National Hot
Association's Winston Drag Racing series, Shelly
Anderson has four national event wins. She also has
had a Budweiser Classic win in her Top Fuel career,
which began in 1992. With three NHRA national speed
records and one NHRA national ET record, Shelly
Anderson's anxiously awaiting the start of her '99
season. Parts America, Shelly's major sponsor the
last three years, was bought by a major competitor,
and now she's hoping to find a new sponsor so she
can be racing soon. In the meantime, Shelly can be
seen as a member of the ESPN Speed World Race
coverage team, covering the '99 Winston Drag Racing
Series. She can also be seen on Real TV March 1,
1999, and on an ongoing show on the Learning
Channel (TLC).
Shelly has never been a stranger to cars,
engines, or drag racing for that matter. Her
well-rounded racing background began while growing
up; she spent much of he time working on cars. She
also spent a considerable amount of time around her
father, Brad, and his championship-winning Top
Alcohol Funny Car. Before beginning her driving
career, Shelly attended college at California State
University at Fullerton, where she graduated in
1991 with a bachelor of arts degree in speech
communications. Shelly was even her father's crew
chief before becoming a driver.
In her strongest season to date, Shelly posted
two victories in 1996, and set her third NHRA
national speed record at 316.23 mph on October 12,
at the Texas Motorplex (which has since been
broken).
Shelly's brother, Randy, is the driver of the
Oakwood Interiors Nitro Funny Car. Shelly and Randy
will forever be in the history books of the NHRA
drag racing series as the first ever sister-brother
professional team. In 1997, his rookie season,
Randy was in the final round four times and earned
two victories.
Team effort means family for the Anderson's,
their family operation runs deep. Brad Anderson,
Shelly and Randy's father, owns the teams and Brad
Anderson Enterprises, a design and manufacturing
facility which makes cylinder heads and other
racing components. Leigh Ann, Shelly and Randy's
sister, takes care of the day-to-day business
operations, while Carol, their mother, takes an
active role as the team's emotional leader.
