Cara-Beth Burnside

Cara-Beth Burnside, a pioneer in women's skateboarding, has complained for ages about the inequities in her male-dominated sport, especially when it comes to prize money and exposure at the Summer X Games (sometimes referred to as the Summer seX-Games.) A year ago, Burnside, a two-time X Games gold medalist in skateboarding Vert, formed the Action Sports Alliance to create a stronger, more unified voice for women in action sports. When the games debuted in 1995, six of 29 events were specifically designed for women and another, the Eco Challenge, paired a man and woman. Of this year's 16 events, there are only two — skateboard vert and skateboard street — for women. Burnside and other female skateboarders threatened to boycott last summer's X-Games in the hopes of forcing ESPN to make improvements. They did complete. She received $2,000 for first place last year while the men's winner received $50,000. And, she's been heard. ESPN raised the total prize money in women's skateboarding to $80,000 — with a first-place prize of $15,000 — but that's still paltry when compared with the men's $225,000 total purse. But, there were no plans to televise any of the women's events this year.
