Who started you: Mom & Step Dad
Biggest influence: Lou Gasparrelli, Dale Pulde & Jimmy Scott
Father's Thoughts: My biological father used to race and thinks it's cool
Your encouragement to others: Go for it
Many people ask if it's easier being a "woman" than a man in this sport, the reality is, we are competitor's
There is a difference though when it is hard earned blood, sweat, tears and your own pocketbook paying for everything rather than the backing of a wealthy family.
There are so many things to remember than just showing up at the race or an event to sign autographs.
Some of those things are, does the trailer have proper tires, is the porta potty cleaned for the next race, did you buy enough food and beverages for the crew and did you pack it properly in the coolers, making sure the generator is full of diesel, is the transporter serviced, etc...... Is everything loaded properly so no damage is sustained in transporting, do you have enough spare parts for the races you're attending, etc......Then there is the actual driving to the track and home after the weekend is over, Not hopping on the airplane ride home without a care in the world. It's a lot of hard work and determination. Let's not forget the marketing that goes a long with all of this hand in hand.
We are lucky, since I worked for The Walt Disney Company and run my own music studio, I'm very familiar with what it takes and how to handle corporate meetings.
My guess is a lot less female competitor's out there would partake in racing if they had to do even some of the things that I've mentioned.

Began going to the races at age 3.
Worked at various tracks doing time slips, scales, fuel checks, ticket counter, merch booths etc.
Worked at NHRA with Mom as a kid during the summer (she worked for Wally & Barbara Parks)
Met Lou & Vicki Gasparelli at age 13 and until the age of 19 had specific jobs on their funny car.
Had kids and raised a family
2001 bought a S/C dragster and went many rounds, most being 5 at Sonoma National 2004 (?)
Drove first F/C at Hawley's in June 2004.
Bought Camaro F/C end of 2005.
Finished License at Vegas Test Session 2006.
So far of 6 divisional races, qualified at 4, not going past first round.
Less than 30 passes in the car to date with at least 10 of them in the 5 second zone.

Nancy Matter attended her first race at the fabled San Fernando Raceway at the tender age of three. While growing up in the Southern California hotbed of drag racing, she spent countless weekends bracket racing with her mom, and traveled to numerous NHRA National and Divisional events with her step-dad. To say the hook was set in her young, impressionable mind during these years would be an understatement. Her strong desire to further her involvement in drag racing landed the youngster a summer job at NHRA, where she met and knew "everyone." Nancy's first hands-on Funny Car experience came when she met Lou and Vicki Gasparrelli, and she crewed with their competitive Alcohol Funny Car team throughout her teenage years.

Nancy stepped away from racing in the mid-80s to raise her two children, Ryan and Jamie, and also developed a career in the music industry. In 1998 Nancy founded Moonlight Mastering, a successful music studio, earning upwards of 35 gold and platinum recordings together with mega-superstars such as Peter Gabriel, The Who, Ray Charles, Genesis, and Run DMC, just to name a few. She always kept her fundamental goal in mind however, to own and drive a competitive racecar.

After completing her licensing at the Frank Hawley School of Drag Racing Nancy began competing in a Super Comp dragster. Nancy knew from the very beginning that she was destined to race a Funny Car, but realized that driving a dragster would earn her some very valuable experience. During three years of competitive Super Comp racing she also crewed on John Patton's "Foolish Money" Funny Car team, skillfully absorbing as much specialized knowledge as she could.

When Nancy sold her dragster, she buried herself in the studio for more than 18 months, churning out hundreds of albums. Her absence from the scene left fellow racers concerned, but Nancy assured them that she would return; "only this time it would be in a flopper."

In 2005, Nancy bought a turnkey 2002 Camaro Funny Car built by chassis builder Bob Massey. The car had only 30 laps on it, and all the components were brand new. She earned her Top Alcohol Funny Car license at the beginning of the 2006 season, and is now in a career transition while focusing all of her energy towards a career as a full-time professional drag racer. What's her ultimate goal? Driving a Nitro Funny Car – of course!

Nancy Matter Racing Debuts a New Look Heading Into Topeka

After a seven week break to relocate their racing shop and music studio, the Top Alcohol Funny Car Team of Nancy Matter is ready to get back into action this weekend at Topeka's Heartland Park Division 5 Lucas Oil Drag Racing Series Event.

Many changes have happened and Matter's team is very proud to announce that her team has a brand new look. Matter, who is always thinking outside the box for alternative marketing, is extremely proud to introduce two new companies to their team and to NHRA Championship Drag Racing. Lamb's Tire & Automotive Center of Austin and Precision Hail Experts of Lewisville are combined together with Applied Tool & Supply of Austin and TigerFlow of Tulsa, Oklahoma.

"Everything has come together so quickly" notes Matter, "when we were contacted by Ron Meredith of Lamb's Tire and Automotive last week, we had no idea that we were going to be fortunate enough to completely redesign the car, wrap it and receive all fresh parts so we can compete for the remainder of the 2008 Racing season and beyond."

Funny Car Driver Nancy Matter Wins Match Race in Texas

The Applied Tool and Supply / TigerFlow Top Alcohol Funny Car Team of Nancy Matter recently became the recipient of the team's first win at North Star Dragway in Denton, Texas. The event was the second anniversary of North Star's July Spectacular Racing event. The eighth mile event included Nitro Burning Altereds along with Aaron Tatum and Brandon Lewis's (piloted by Kate Harker) Top Alcohol Dragsters.

The match race was contested by Matter and fellow competitor, Jim Phillips, who traveled down from Southern Indiana for the event. Both Teams were vying for the best two out of three passes with extremely quick servicing times between rounds.

"We made three passes in less than four hours and we were down two crew guys" notes Matter. "Jeremy one and Jeremy two, along with myself all did double duty to make sure everything was done before we were rushed up to the lanes for the next lap."

"Jim Phillips and I were one to one going into the third pass which made it really great for the fans. We ended up with the win from the third pass with a pedaling job of 4.04 at close to 190 miles per hour in the eighth to Jim's time of 4.22 at just over 180 miles per hour."

Matter's team is very motivated and are looking forward to their next NHRA race which will be contested in the middle of August.

In addition, Matter is in the developmental stage of having her own clothing line that will be available soon.

Nancy Matter Racing Riding High Into the Heartland

Following a successful outing at the recent LODRS event at Houston Motorsports Park, the Drag Strip Girl and Applied Tool Supply-backed TA/FC Team of Nancy Matter would like to keep the momentum rolling through the O'Reilly NHRA Summer Nationals in Topeka, Kan.

"Our team has learned an awful lot since our last trip here in 2006", said Matter. "I'm pleased with the job my crew has done since I debuted this car two years ago. They have absorbed a lot of data and tuning suggestions from other prominent crew chiefs, which allows me to focus on driving. You have to keep in mind that I have an all-volunteer crew that's spread out over a few states. The only time we are all together is when we're at a race." Matter continued, "Jeremey Mitchell handles most of the between-race servicing by himself. I am extremely grateful to my entire crew, Eugene & Kelly Rowson, Jeremy Lowe and Desmond, for taking time off from their 'day jobs' to come moonlight with me at the drags."

"We continue to creep up on the tune-up, thanks in part to the behind-the-scenes support of Tom Conway, and have now gotten to the point where we feel confident of qualifying for the show. Our goal is to qualify solidly in the field at Heartland Park Topeka, get a couple of more round wins under our belts, and move up in the national points standings."

Matter added, "We especially want to thank Karl and Marty Belt from Applied Tool Supply of Austin for coming onboard with associate sponsorship for this event. They attended their first drag race at Houston Motorsports Park and had a fantastic time." Obviously, we left a good impression on them", concluded Matter.

Matter Earns Semi-Final Finish At Houston Raceway Park

Following three rounds of qualifying, Nancy Matter qualified in the seventh spot of the eight-car field. Matter Racing had very little data to work with, as the car never performed to its potential, encountering severe tire shake on each pass. "On our second qualifier, we shook so hard that it sheered all but one blower stud off and lifted the supercharger", noted Matter. "We softened the car a lot for the third run just to get it down the track. We went a little too far, however, we were still in the field, so we were pretty happy to be running on Sunday".

Mother Nature's weather conditions drastically changed from qualifying for Sunday's eliminations, creating a roll of the dice for all competitors at the third of six Division 4 Lucas Oil Drag Racing Series Events. The track temp jumped from 87 degrees during qualifying to 138 degrees for race day, so it was anyone's race.

Matter knew that Sunday would be no easy task as she was going to race her good friend and #2 qualifier Lee Callaway in the first round. Matter had a decent .029 light and won on a hole shot with a 6.04 over the defending Div 4 champ's 6.01, after both cars were shaking and skating around their respective lanes.

In the semi-final match up, Matter had a .059 light against opponent Steve Burke's .053 light and narrowly missed making it to her first final round appearance. "I saw his motor eating itself up, trailing smoke and slowing, but I short-shifted when the car started to shake and it killed enough of our time, that I was about to the back of his car when we passed the stripe".

Transmission Gremlin Forces DNQ for Matter's Season Opener

The Top Alcohol Funny Car Team of Nancy Matter had hoped for better results at the 21st Annual running of the O'Reilly Spring Nationals in Baytown this past weekend. The team, armed with a complete new arsenal of parts, was plagued with transmission issues for each pass keeping them from qualifying within the 16-car field.

"We made some significant changes in the fuel system prior to going into this race", stated Matter. "On the first pass, when the car launched, it shook and bounced around a bit but I opted to drive through it. When I shifted, there was a delay in the 1-2 shift which resulted in the motor hitting the rev limiter forcing me to quickly lift to avoid any carnage."

"We serviced the car, double and triple checked everything and it appeared we were good to go for the second qualifier. Unfortnately, we experienced the same result at the same location on the track. At that point, we knew we'd already lost two mid to high 5.60 passes which would have qualified us well within the top half of the field."

The team worked many hours into the morning going through everything with a fine tooth comb for Saturday's third and final attempt. During the warm up, plagued with even more problems, they were forced to pull the bottom end, valve train and one head, change some rods and pistons, and reassemble everything. Since the Top Alcohol Dragsters had already been pulled to the lanes, Matter's team pulled together and completed all the necessary repairs in a mere 17 minutes, during which Matter suited up and was already strapped in the car and getting into the lanes with three pairs of dragsters left to run.

"Even though we suffered the same shifting problem during that third run which forced our DNQ, I was so proud of the guys for doing what they did", lamented Matter. "If there was ever an award for a Sportsman Team Mechanic Award, our team earned it that morning. It was quite amazing to witness. It would not have been possible if we had to remove the manifold and supercharger, but in this case, even though we fixed that issue, we still missed the boat somewhere in the drive train."

Matter's team has since disassembled everything at their shop in Austin, Texas, since the race. After numerous trouble shooting phone calls with Mike at B & J and Jackie Stidham, there is nothing visibly or physically wrong that can be found inside the drive train or transmission. The team is going to rebuild everything and try again next week at the second of six Lucas Oil Drag Racing Series Division 4 Event at Ennis, Texas.

Matter would like to thank her Team for their hard work and devotion, MSD, Mike Strausberg, Mike Pavia, Joe Monden, Tom Conway, Jimmy Jones and crew, Jackie Stidham, Clint Thompson, Hutch and Leif Andreasson.

Excessive Tire Shake Ends Nancy Matter's Weekend Early at Topeka's Heartland Park

Although the Top Alcohol Funny Car Team of Nancy Matter lost in the first round of eliminations at this weekend's NHRA Summer Nationals at Heartland Park in Topeka, Kansas, the team had many successful events that happened over the course of the event.

The second round of qualifying was the only time the team made a full pass, running a 5.89 and securing the 15th position of the field.

"On the first run, we broke the number two spark plug at the hit and posted an off-pace 6.30 on seven cylinders," lamented Matter. "The second qualifier was better, but we knew to be a contender for first round, we needed to find some additional horsepower".

Matter's Team enlisted the help of Clint Thompson, and together they opted to work on the clutch area. The third qualifier resulted in shake at the top of first gear forcing Matter to quickly pedal the car and finish the run.

"We had Sean in first round and they've been running well. So, without any computer data from the final qualifier, we decided to try something that we've never tried before to get more response out of the car at the hit. We knew it would either really shoot out from the starting line, or hit really hard and shake. The gamble didn't pay off as the latter of the two was what happened"

Nancy Matter Anticipates Successful Results for 2008 Season Opener

The Top Alcohol Funny Car Team of Nancy Matter is eager to get out to the track this weekend for competition at the 21st Annual O'Reilly Spring Nationals in Southeast Texas.

Matter, who is positioning herself into a full time professional drag racer, is ready to kick off the beginning of her third full season of competition within the Alcohol Class. This marks her seventh year as an owner and driver, having originally competed in the Super Comp class.

Following a disappointing delay which forced the team to withdraw from competition earlier in the month at the Lucas Oil Sportsman Series Division 4 opener in Belle Rose, LA, Matter's team is more than ready to get to the track and compete.

"We have several goals for this weekend. The first, like all competitors, is to post solid numbers early and qualify well within the field", states Matter. "We've been doing a lot of homework during the off season which has led us to yet another huge leap forward within our fuel system that we've incorporated. Hopefully, we'll finish off the weekend getting at least one win light or more to our credit during eliminations."

Matter's Camaro is back to basics in design this weekend with the exception of her new marketing partner Drag Strip Girl on the hood of the car.

The 21st Annual O'Reilly Spring Nationals in Baytown, Texas, kicks off on Friday, March 28th with two rounds of qualifying at 12:00 and 4:00 p.m. for the Alcohol Class. Qualifying resumes on Saturday, March 29th at 10:00 a.m. followed by first round of eliminations at 1:00 p.m. Final Eliminations begin on Sunday, March 30th, at 11:00 a.m. For all the latest updates and racing results, log on to www.dracecentral.com presented by Summitracing.com 1-800-230-3030 or www.NHRA.com

Nancy Matter Racing Rusk Recap Wrap Up

The Music.Com/The Who 2007 Top Alcohol Funny Car Team of Nancy Matter ran into their fare share of events this past weekend at the fifth of seven Lucas Oil Drag Racing Series South Central Division 4 Series events in Rusk, Texas.

On Matter's first pass, her chin strap broke throwing her head back and slightly catching on the roll cage padding. When she pulled her head forward, Matter began to pedal the car to continue on the run when she noticed down track that her opponent was skating all over his lane, knowing that he's a great racer, but new to driving a funny car, she opted to abort the run feeling that it was the safest thing to do.

On the Team's second pass, they experienced a problem with the throttle linkage and it wouldn't go full throttle like they are supposed to. The car stayed dead straight in the groove, however, getting it to full throttle didn't happen until about 200 foot when it finally opened to a wide open throttle for her to finish out the run.

For Matter's third and final attempt, with the throttle linkage fixed, thanks to Dickie Callaway, Tom Conway and her team mate Jeremy Mitchell, the team was able to lay down a solid .999 second 60 foot in the heat of the day, but was still unable to collect all the data from the run from extenuating circumstances.

"Since we didn't have any solid data for Tom to work with at that point, we didn't change the tune up. When we got a solid 60 foot and then over powered the track, it was a great thing for all of us. I pedaled the car when it shook on that third qualifier and kept it in the groove but was only full throttle for 5.51 seconds since I lifted when my opponent shattered the last three cones on the run which left us once again without any accurate data up to that point in the run and in the sixth position going into Race Day. Despite the hurdles though, at that point, we knew we were going to be ready for Sunday's eliminations" says Matter.

Matter continues "On Sunday, Tom is so brilliant with what little data he had to work with, he picked the perfect tune up that set us up very competitively. We were a head of Kebin until just about 1100 foot where he snuck around us and got the stripe by about 1/2 car length. It was a Great Drag Race. Kebin came up to me at the end of the track and said that all he saw was a purple car the whole way down and didn't think he was going to win".

The Music.Com/The Who 2007 Top Alcohol Team will next be racing at Englishtown in late June, 2007 during NHRA's SuperNationals. The Team is completely ready and was hoping to make it to Heartland Park in Topeka for the next stop on the NHRA Powerade Tour, however, due to Nancy's obligations with the upcoming concerts of The Who and Peter Gabriel, her team must bypass that particular event to fulfill her prior musical obligations.
