Racing Fan Turned Race Car Driver
Hello everyone! This is my first time blogging for
Female Racing News. I am so ecstatic to be able to
share aspects of my racing career with all of you,
and to be a part of such a great site! For
starters, I would like to introduce myself and give
you some background on my racing career.
I am currently 18 years old, and I attend the
University of St. Francis where I am studying for
my BSN. On top of being a Deans List student,
I also play collegiate tennis. I am involved in a
lot of campus activities including: Duns Scotus
Honors Program, Commuter Assistants, and the
Student Nurses Association. Lets just say
that after reading that, many cannot fathom the
idea that I race cars, especially my fellow
classmates. I find it confusing that so many people
are not familiar with the sport when I eat, sleep,
and breathe racing!
My grandfather was a mechanic, and my uncle
raced a few years before my brother and I were
born. I guess you can say that racing was in my
blood. I have attended NASCAR and NHRA since my
youth, and I had never thought that I would be
racing my own car someday. Unlike most people, my
mother is the one who kick started my career. One
Friday night towards the end of my sophomore year
in high school, my mother took me to our local dirt
track to watch some friends of ours race. The sound
of impacts and the smell of racing fuel immediately
drew me in. As we were sitting in the stands
waiting for a race, the UMP Sport Compact class
came out. My mother jokingly said, Hey, look
Shannon. We should get you one of those!
Little did she know that I would take her
seriously. A month later I had a car, another month
passed and I was racing for my first time at
Lasalle Speedway.
After wrapping up my third year in UMP Sport
Compacts this September, I have gathered numerous
wins and awards. My rookie year I was named Most
Improved Driver by Kankakee Speedway, followed by
being featured in an article in Circle Track
magazine the following year. My 2011 season was
capped off with 2 heat wins, 15 consecutive Top
10s and 5 Top 5s, with also finishing
31st in National Northern UMP points and 108th in
National UMP points.
So where is my fourth year taking me, you ask? I
recently announced that I am moving up to the
highly acclaimed class of UMP Modified. A move from
a 4cyl to a V8 engine will be a big transition. I
am proud to also have the chance to represent
Race4Girls this year. I am so thankful for all of
my familys hard work and dedication to help
me achieve my dreams!
