Bio
Debbie Moderow, 53, was born and raised in
Connecticut. She received her BA from Princeton in
1977. Before coming to Alaska in 1979 for a
mountain climbing expedition, she was living in
Wyoming. While she was in Alaska for that trip, she
met her future husband, Mark Moderow. For the
Moderows, dog mushing has always been a family
affair. In 1989 they adopted their first sled dog,
and ever since their lives have centered around the
dogs in their back yard. Children Andy and Hannah
grew up on the runners of a sled, each
participating in four Jr. Iditarods. In 2001,
eighteen year old Andy ran the Iditarod, and under
the burled arch he delivered a legacy, "Mom, you
have to do this." When both the kids left for
college, Debbie responded to the empty nest by
entering the 2003 and 2005 Iditarods. Her husband,
Mark, ran to Nome in 2004. Between 2005 and 2009
the Moderows have enjoyed raising and training
several litters of puppies. In 2007, many of these
yearlings completed the Serum Run with Debbie, Mark
and Hannah. It is with particular delight that
Debbie will be running to Nome with this new
generation of pups. She feels fortunate to have the
opportunity to raise, train and run her sled dogs
across Alaska and is grateful to the countless
volunteers that make this journey possible. Her
goal is to enjoy a safe and strong run, and to
reach the burled arch with healthy dogs, their
tails wagging.
